Turquoise - a healing stone for body and spirit

Turquoise - a healing stone for body and spirit

Turquoise is probably one of the oldest minerals in human history, having been the talisman of kings, shamans and warriors. It is a protective stone, strong and opaque, but soothing to the touch. As if cut from the azure sky and sent to earth. Its unique shade of blue, often with a slight greenish hint, lends its name to all things of this beautiful color. For thousands of years turquoise has appeared in a multitude of cultures. It was prized as a symbol of wisdom, nobility and immortality. Among the ancient Egyptians, Persians and Chinese, Aztecs and Incas, and Native Americans of North America, it was considered a sacred stone, signifying power, luck and protection.
Its name comes from the French pierre turquoise, meaning "Turkish stone," because the trade routes that brought turquoise from mines in Central Asia to Europe passed through Turkey, and Venetian merchants often bought it in Turkish bazaars. For many centuries it was believed to have the power to protect horsemen from injuries caused by falls. It was used as an amulet by Turkish soldiers, who carried it with them and attached it to their horses' bridles. Later it was widely used to protect against all kinds of falls. Turquoise is also believed to be affected by the physical state of the person wearing it. According to some, it is supposed to fade when its owner is sick or sad, while losing all color when he dies. After gaining a new, healthy owner, it is supposed to gradually regain its color, which becomes more intense with each passing day. Turquoise is attributed with the property of providing friendly respect. In the East, turquoise rings were worn as protection against all evil. A proverb said that "given by a loving hand, they bring luck and good fortune." However, the ring only gave protective energy if it was a gift from a friend. It was believed to restore clarity of thought to the mind and thus provide good fortune.
